Arthur Dodge memorialized by the State Legislature

Rep. Percy sponsors legislative sentiment for long term advocate for clean clam flats

March 18, 2009

AUGUSTA – Rep. Leila Percy, D-Phippsburg, was joined by Sen. Stan Gerzofsky, and the entire Marine Resources Committee, including local legislators Rep. Bruce MacDonald, D-Boothbay, and Rep. Kerry Prescott, R-Topsham, in sponsoring a special legislative sentiment in memory of water quality activist and Maine Soft Shell Clam Advisory Committee founder Arthur I. Dodge of Harpswell.

“Mr. Dodge was tireless in his passion and advocacy for clean water and safe and productive clam flats for our diggers,” said Percy. “He will be greatly missed by the people of Harpswell, folks who live on and enjoy Casco Bay, and the people who worked with him throughout Maine.”

The special sentiment read in part, “Arthur I. Dodge, of Harpswell served in the United States Coast Guard from 1951-1954. He became a valuable asset to the marine resources of this state by collecting sea water samples to monitor the clam flats of Casco Bay, participating in a phytoplankton monitoring program that helps the Department of Marine Resources to detect red tide early warning signals, and analyzing surface water samples for the Friends of Casco Bay. Dodge was instrumental in founding the original Maine Soft Shell Clam Advisory Committee and he served on the Harpswell Marine Resources Committee for many years.

In December 2008, he received citations from both the town of Harpswell and the state for his committee and water quality work. Dodge will be long remembered and greatly missed by his family and friends, as well as the people of this state who will continue to benefit from his tireless dedication to our valuable resources.”
