Pingree and Miramant earn perfect scores from social change advocacy group
August 14, 2008
AUGUSTA – The Maine People’s Alliance recently praised State Reps. Hannah Pingree, D-North Haven and David Miramant, D-Camden, for their voting records in favor of bills that will directly benefit working Mainers. Both scored a perfect 100 percent record for the 2008 legislative session.
Pingree and Miramant were among other legislators who scored high marks for their support of new laws aimed at protecting the rights of Mainers. In its annual scorecard, MPA considers votes by legislators that advance economic, environmental, racial and social justice; encourage citizen involvement and transparency in democracy; and support shared responsibility in improving Maine’s quality of life.
“Maine people want and deserve policies that protect them and their families,” Pingree said. “Health care, fair work standards and a clean environment are some of the things Maine families are concerned about.”
Pingree sponsored two of the bills MPA used in its report card: one that will rid household products of dangerous toxins, and the other to continue leading the effort to provide health insurance to Maine people.
Bills supported by MPA during the 2008 session included legislation to help to reduce health care costs, ensure fair wages and raise the minimum wage, provide sick days for working families and make children’s toys safe from dangerous chemicals.
“As a member of the Legislature’s Natural Resources Committee, I work to maintain healthy standards Maine people are accustomed to in their workplace, home and natural surroundings,” Miramant said. “I have been especially interested in the policy work around chemicals and toxins in products we use every day.”
