Peter Steele

Director of Communications

Peter Steele serves as the Director of Communications for the Office of the Governor. Steele's duties include strategic management and direction of executive communications, as well as coordination with state agencies.

Steele has worked in the newspaper industry for more than 25 years. He and his wife founded Twin City TIMES, Lewiston-Auburn’s weekly newspaper, in 1999. Most recently, he served as communications director for The Maine Heritage Policy Center, a conservative think tank based in Portland.

Steele grew up in the newspaper business, starting as a teenager in the 100-year-old paper on Cape Cod run by his family, the Provincetown Advocate. After working for a decade as a reporter, editor and photographer at the Advocate, he became editor-in-chief of Boston’s award-winning South End News. He is a 1987 graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

Steele and his wife Laurie have five children. They live in Auburn.
