Public Events for the Week of September 26, 2011

Monday, September 26, 2011

1:00 p.m.-3:25 p.m.
Education Nation Summit
Location: New York City, NY

Background

NBC News’ Brian Williams will host governors from states across the country for a special “Education Nation” panel session focused on education and economic competitiveness, entitled The State of Education: The Governor’s Perspective.

Participating Governors’ include: Governor LePage; Governor Fallin; Governor Chafee; Governor Haslam, Governor Walker; Governor McDonnell; Governor Parnell; Governor Markell; Governor O’Malley; and Governor Hickenlooper.

Scheduled for Monday, September 26th, the discussion will cover a myriad of major issues facing state leadership such as budget cuts, the Common Core and college readiness, No Child Left Behind, the role of teachers unions, early childhood education, teacher effectiveness, college affordability and completion, charter schools, online learning, and Race to the Top. Assembled governors will also field education questions from their own constituents, including: teachers, principals, parents and students.

Governor LePage will focus on leading the global economy. Two-thirds of the jobs created in the U.S. over the next few years are expected to require at least some college education, and if the nation is going to compete with its global competitors, the pathway is through emphasizing high skills and innovation. Yet states continue to struggle with creating a successful pathway from K-12 to college graduation – especially for the students and workers who need the economic boost of higher education the most. And as high-demand, high-growth science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers become increasingly mobile, the competition is sharp.
