John Morris

Commissioner, Department of Public Safety

John Morris has agreed to serve as Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety. Morris has a distinguished record of service in the U.S. Navy and as a municipal Police Chief in Richmond and Waterville. Governor Paul LePage says, “I have worked closely with John throughout my time as Mayor and I know he will be an extremely effective Commissioner.”

During his 13 years as Waterville’s Chief of Police, Morris formed a citizens’ police academy, established a South End police officer position, and launched the “Are You OK?” program to check on the city’s elderly people.  He also instituted the midnight team, bringing police and mental health workers together to respond to crises.

Morris also took his expertise overseas, using vacation time to lead professional law enforcement seminars in places like East Timor and Ethiopia.

“John Morris is highly respected in Waterville for his professionalism and his commitment to making our city a better place to live. He will bring the same approach to the Department of Public Safety,” says Governor LePage.
