Governor Recognizes Soldier’s Family for Establishing Military and Family Retreat
October 7, 2009
LEE – Governor John E. Baldacci today recognized Paul and Deana House for their efforts to turn their personal tragedy into something positive for other military families. The Houses are the parents of Sgt. Joel House, who was killed in Taji, Iraq, in 2007. They have established The House in the Woods Inc., A Military and Family Retreat, a nonprofit organization that provides an outdoors experience to those serving in the military and their families, and to veterans.
“In the spirit of celebrating your son Joel, you are reaching out to help members of our military, their families, and veterans,” said Governor Baldacci. “Using your talents and expertise - and by sharing Maine’s abundant natural beauty and restorative power - your generosity will undoubtedly help countless soldiers and their families heal and reconnect.”
The House in the Woods offers a range of outdoor programs including canoeing, hiking and nature tours to small groups. Participants experience challenges together, providing them with the ability to bond while celebrating Maine’s abundant natural beauty.
The Governor had contributed funds to the nonprofit from his Governor’s contingency account.
The Governor was joined at the event by Walmart officials. Walmart contributed $10,000 to The House in the Woods. Walmart also presented a $5,000 check to the Lincoln Food Cupboard.
