Governor Celebrates Backyard Farms Business Expansion

September 29, 2009

MADISON – Governor John E. Baldacci today visited the new 18-acre greenhouse that is part of a major expansion of Backyard Farms, the largest greenhouse operation in New England. Committed to locally grown, high quality tomato production in an environmentally friendly way, Backyard Farms now employees 200 people in Maine.

“Backyard Farms is the kind of business Maine wants to attract -- responsible operations, good-paying jobs, local investment and community involvement,” said Governor Baldacci. “Backyard Farms has created 200 jobs over the past three years and has made significant investments in local economy.”

The Governor recognized Backyard Farms for its partnership with the State. When the company began three years ago, it utilized Pine Tree Zone incentives from the State, and a Community Development Block Grant from the State was used by the Town of Madison for public infrastructure support to help bring Backyard Farms to the area.

“The continuing growth of Backyard Farms has been a major success story for Maine and strengthens our agricultural heritage with a clear demonstration of how we can capitalize on modern, high-tech greenhouses,” said Governor Baldacci. “I am looking forward to continued successful partnership between the State and Backyard Farms - and continued growth and jobs creation.”
