Greenville LURC Staff to Hold Open House

(October 28, 2011)

AUGUSTA, Maine – The Greenville office of the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC) will hold an open house, question-and-answer outreach session to solicit comments and recommendations on how LURC can improve customer service to property owners and residents of the jurisdiction.

Regional LURC staff will be available to speak to visitors about permitting and compliance matters, planning matters as well as answer questions about land-use regulations.

The open house session will be held:

  • 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Meeting Hall in the Greenville Town Office, 7 Minden Street, Greenville.

“This open house is an opportunity for the public to have a direct question-and-answer session with LURC staff," Rod Falla, LURC Permitting & Compliance acting division manager, said. "We are interested in hearing suggestions from the public about how LURC can make changes to better serve the areas for which it provides planning, zoning and permitting services to the region’s unorganized areas.

"Our goal is to improve customer service,” Falla said.

Created in 1971, LURC serves as the planning and zoning board for the state’s unorganized areas and coastal islands, as well as numerous towns and plantations that elect not to have local land use control. The commission’s jurisdiction encompasses approximately 10.4 million acres or roughly half the size of Maine.

LURC consists of two divisions: the Planning Division, which primarily revises the rules and regulations, updates zoning maps, processes some of the large-scale project applications, such as grid-scale wind power and concept plans, and updates the Comprehensive Land Use Plan; and the Permitting and Compliance Division, which reviews and acts upon permit applications, conducts compliance activities, and enforces the rules and regulations.

The session will be attended by Falla, permitting and compliance staff from the Greenville Regional Office, the division manager for Planning and a senior planner for the region.

This open house is sponsored by the Greenville LURC office and not part of the separately scheduled public meeting being held by the LURC Reform Commission in Greenville, later in November.
