Children's Performances Celebrate Safe Drinking Water Week, May 2 to 8

The Department of Health and Human Service’s Drinking Water Program is sponsoring seven performances of the National Theatre for Children to recognize Drinking Water Week, May 2 to 8. The theatre troupe will travel to Maine schools served by community and public water systems during the week, performing skits that educate kindergarten through sixth grade students about the importance of safe drinking water.


The following public water systems and schools have been selected for the National Theatre for Children’s performances. (Editors: Please note in local calendars and call local contacts to attend and photograph.)

May 2nd Livermore Falls Water District Starting at 10:00, two skits will be presented at Livermore Falls Elementary School. Contact: Doug Burdo (207) 897-3445

Fryeburg Water District Starting at 1:15, one skit will be presented at the Charles A. Snow School. Contact: Jean Andrews (207) 935-2010

May 3rd Mt. Blue Standard Water District Starting at 9:30 AM, one skit will be presented to kindergarten through fifth grade classes at Strong Elementary School. At 1:30 PM one skit will be presented to kindergarten through sixth grade classes at Phillips Elementary School. Mt. Blue District Contact: Carol Rogers (207) 639-5306.

May 4th AquaMaine Water Company, Camden/Rockland Division Starting at 9:00, three skits will be presented to kindergarten through fifth grade classes from Lura Libby and Cushing Community Schools at Lura Libby School in Thomaston. Contact: Lisa Heal 800-287-1643 x136

May 6th Madawaska Water District Starting at 8:30, four skits will be presented to Kindergarten through fourth grade classes at Madawaska Elementary School. Contact: Don Chasse (207)728-3859

Many water utilities throughout Maine will open their doors to the public for tours of drinking water treatment plants, plan poster contests for children, or conduct classroom presentations about water treatment and the importance of source water protection. Call your local water utility to see what activities they have planned for Drinking Water Week 2004. (A community, public water system is defined as regularly serving at least 25 year-round residents. Examples include water utilities, mobile home parks, apartment buildings and nursing homes.)

The Drinking Water Program is part of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Bureau of Health.
