Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at the meetings? All meetings generally follow a specific format. The group convenes at 1:00pm and all members introduce themselves. Introductions are followed by a networking break of approximately 1/2 hour. After the break, members participate in group discussion, activities or a presentation by a guest speaker. Announcements including job opportunities, special events, etc. are made. The group officially adjourns and members can remain until approximately 4pm to socialize and or network at their leisure. Do I have to come to all of the meetings? No. When seeking employment, you need to have the flexibility to be available for interviews and other activities. You do not need to RSVP for meetings and do not need to let anyone know if you are not able to attend. Simply show up when you can. We do ask that you try to be at the beginning of the meeting (if possible) for continuity. Is this a support group? The group was not designed to be a support group but rather an opportunity for unemployed professionals to network. However, members have found it a very supportive and encouraging environment. Being with others who are experiencing similar issues can be helpful. The meetings are designed to be fun and educational and the coordinator strives to maintain a positive environment while sharing, learning and having fun.

Comments from former members of the L/A UP Group

"Again, thank you - the 'outplaced professional' group will be missed, but it was the kick-start that I needed to move on. You have an extremely proactive group - and I will miss my affiliation with L/A." "The group was such an inspiration to me, I only hope it gives the same motivation to others." "I'm going to miss the UP group meetings. You create an interesting event, even on days when there's no guest speaker. Thank you for your support and some very informative meetings. I would not change your meeting format. It's great!" "I must commend you for your work with the Unemployed Professionals Group-and also the Career Center itself. Neither of which I even knew existed. I had to get thrown out of my "comfort zone" to know what was out there in the outside world. I will definitely recommend both and if this does not work out, I will be back!"
