Department NewsMaine Department of Agriculture releases new "Agricultural Creative Economy Study"January 28, 2008 Contact: John Harker The Department of Agriculture has just released a new study, "The Agricultural Creative Economy." This study focuses on the needs, opportunities and market analysis for farmers who direct market their products. The Department recommends 10 initiatives to support this growing, $75 million sector of Maine agriculture. Consumers want more fresh, local products. Farmers want to increase profits by directly marketing their products. Food processors want to use more Maine ingredients. Wholesale grocery chains are seeking more local products. In short, "Local" is the new buzz word, and Word of Mouth marketing is the new promotion method to help consumers find local markets. The report lists a number of initiatives for the legislature to review for state investment in education, training, and research. The report is available in PDF format for downloading. Limited printed copies are available upon request. Related Files |
