ORONO - If a horse fell into your swimming pool, you would likely call 911.

The local fire department would arrive quickly. And that, according to the state of Maine, is just the beginning of the problem.

Until Friday, none of those firefighters was likely to have been trained in large-animal rescue.

Thirty animal control officers, veterinarians, technicians, state humane agents and firefighters gathered Friday at the University of Maine in Orono to remedy that with three days of intense animal rescue training.
