August 3, 2005

Contact:

This course was held July 16, 17 at the Augusta, Maine Civic Center and was Co-sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and SMART. There were 68 attendees and twelve of Maine’s sixteen counties were represented.

The first day was lecture format and covered everything from planning to actually running an Emergency Animal Shelter. Day two was hands on starting with a table top exercise which was followed by an emergency animal sheltering simulation. In addition to the very capable staff from HSUS who conducted the training we were pleased to have as speakers Arthur Cleaves, Director of the Maine Emergency Management Agency and Robert Bohlman County Emergency Director for York County.

This course was a great start for Maine to develop a state wide system of animal friendly shelters.
