Spring Garden Celebration Planned
Spring Garden Celebration PlannedPrepare for those summer projects at the Spring Garden Celebration.The Waldo County office of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension has planned the Spring Garden Celebration to be held at Unity College on Quaker Hill Road in Unity on April 28th, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will feature early and late morning workshops, followed by vegetarian and non-vegetarian brunch prepared by Unity College. Workshops will continue in the afternoon. The early morning sessions offer workshop options including a Wild Mushroom Romp, a slide show supported talk on edible and medicinal mushrooms by Greg Marley; a presentation on container gardens by Kathy Hopkins; an introduction to raising and training Bonsai by Ernie Glabau; and Cooperative Extensions David Handley providing a presentation of growing your own strawberries. Options for late morning workshops include an examination of the cultural practices of Maine’s first farmers by Kerry Hardy of Merryspring Park; a workshop by Caragh Fitzgerald on the use of cover crops to build soil and suppress weeds; a workshop by Rick Kersbergen on raising high bush blueberries; and a presentation by Kelly Comer of Johnny’s Selected Seeds on common and not-so-common cut flowers. Afternoon workshops include creating Japanese-inspired gardens; Ikebana Sogetsu flower arrangements; pruning fruit trees; and starting a garden on sodded ground.
