NSAAS Publishes Agricultural Labor Statistics

Agriculture represents more than 17 percent of all jobs in rural Maine.

The Northeast States Association for Agricultural Stewardship, an affiliate of the Eastern Regional Conference of the Council of State Governments, has compiled and published a brochure on agricultural employment statistics for the Northeast region. The brochure includes agricultural employment statistics for Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

According to their research, the total farm and farm-related employment for Maine included 125,039 jobs in 2001, representing nearly one of every six jobs in the State. Agricultural employment in Maine accounted for 16 percent of the workforce and 17.7 percent of the rural workforce. The expense of hired agricultural labor in Maine in 2001 totaled more than $78 million dollars. The value of agricultural products sold (farmgate value) that year was more than $463 million.
