1. Updates

Maine State Board of Education Meeting (7/13)

·         Kathy and Jim gave a presentation on the Task Force Project

·         Kerry’s survey of superintendents was also presented

·         Kathy reported much interest from everyone

KIDS Conference (June 27-July 1)

·         favorable feedback overall

·         wide variety of people attended

·         Robert Putnam was a favorite speaker; other main presenters included Bonnie Bernard and Sara Pearson

ECS Meeting in Denver

·         Patrick reported an overall good, successful conference & visit

·         the Maine team included Patrick Phillips, Fran Rudoff, Rick Lyons, Rep. Steve Bowen, and Rep. Jackie Norton

·         Jackie and Steve were interested in attending the Congressional Conference in September ’05.

·         Maine team expressed interest in the role of the legislature, LYAC’s new staffing arrangement within the Legislative Council, and the next phase of the Task Force’s work

·         Campus Compact, ECS, and other groups talked about better collaboration so that all are not competing for same national funds

·         Memorable speakers included Paul Houston, Bob Franco, and Tony Chambers

·         A strong theme among the state break-out session  was the context of PK-16 coordination / reform

 

 

2. Announcements

·         Phil McCarthy of OPLA will now staff the LYAC. A meeting with Phil will be arranged to introduce him to the Task Force.

·         The meeting with the Great Maine Schools is scheduled for July 20th at 10am in Augusta.

·         The Gates Foundation has awarded the MDOE 1.4 Million dollars (Maine is 1 of 10 states) for high school reform

·         Ted Sharp has agreed to serve on the social studies content panel of the LR Review. He will also be a liaison to the TF and a BP subcommittee member.

·         Education Law Conference is July 25-28. Speakers include persons from DOE, as well as Fran, Jim, Patrick, and Stacy.

 

 

3. Subcommittee Check-in

Web Site—meeting with InforME needs to be arranged

BC—Fran asked Kathy and Dara to be present at 7/21 campaign meeting. Also needs fall calendar for all related media events

BP—still gathering exemplars

HE—requested Patrick’s presence for 8/10 meeting

YVL—meeting with Doug Dunbar on 26th; need replacement for Cory True on LYAC

 

 

4. Agenda for Sept. 9 Retreat

Items include:

--finalization of workplan; sense of sharpened focus

--National Constitutional Day (9/17); media campaign

--subcommittee structure & communication

--LYAC & legislature

 

 

5. Items for September 15 Task Force meeting

Items include:

--How to sustain energy level among Task Force members.

--invite legislators, superintendents
