§ Review of Public Engagement Campaign |
§ Kathy has met with the “Readiness Campaign” (readiness for college, career, and citizenship) people and it seems like there is room for coordination between our groups. This group is entirely separate from ours now, but was pulled together by Patrick Phillips, Deputy Commissioner of Education and Co-Chair of the Citizenship Education Task Force. The group also has a lot of money from the Gates Foundation to put into its work. o Colleen Quint of the Mitchell Institute, Henry Bourgeois of the Maine Compact for Higher Education, and Norm Higgins are leaders in this work. o Although citizenship is part of their campaign, it seems like college is getting the big “C.” We need to help make citizenship a bigger “C” in the entire campaign. o Some of the group’s ideas are to host leadership trainings and to share stories with the public through some sort of campaign. · We could help by providing them with stories and content/people for these leadership trainings. · This group is really not very organized yet, so we have work to do around figuring out where the overlap between our two groups is and where we plug in, then having a meeting with members of the “Readiness” group. § For the Task Force’s Public Engagement Campaign, Doug Dunbar is supposed to be drafting a more detailed workplan (including a timeline), but has been very tied up with the elections. So, Kathy will touch base with him in the next week to see where that’s going. o Ideas are to look to groups like MYAN, Realize!Maine, League of Pissed Off Voters, League of Women Voters, etc. to help involve local regional youth and young people once the “road show” gets started. o Until we have a more detailed timeline from Doug Dunbar, there is not much planning we can do around this. |

§ Adding New Members |
§ There is definitely a need to expand again, after losing many members from last year. §
If we really want young people engaged, maybe
we should move the meetings to Ian’s school ( § We should wait until we have developed clearer goals before inviting more young people to join. § Members from Broadening the Coalition might have interest in working with us on the Public Engagement Campaign (including Peter Taylor, Steve Bromage, Ann Luther, Bob Woodbury, David Richards, Susan Savell, and Eric Jorgensen). o They have not been invited yet. Our group agreed that it would be better to have a working meeting and formulate a plan as a small group before inviting them to the table for their input and consequently their participation in the Public Engagement Campaign. |
|
§ Next Meeting |
§ We need to have a work meeting, SOON. Prior to the meeting we will send out the “Readiness Campaign’s” draft of mission/workplan. Everyone should review this and come to the meeting ready to sit down and work on seeing how we fit into their work and what we bring to the table. Then, we will set up an initial meeting with members from the “Readiness Campaign.” o This
meeting will be either Nov. 22 or Nov 29, §
It
seems an appropriate time to review the history of our work- what were our
initial goals and what have we done in the past year. We need to be clear on our goals and where
they come from in order to move forward with recruitment and
collaboration. |
