Agenda Item(s):

Major Points of Discussion:

1.      Debriefs: Youth-Adult Panel and Discussion, Follow up discussion at Steering Committee

2.      Discussion of next steps for youth involvement in the task force

YVL Subcommittee feedback on Youth-Adult Panel and Discussion:

-         was a slap on the back, propelled the TF forward to think about youth voice.

-         YVL members were surprised at how much TF members didn’t know

-         Felt like a whole bunch of light bulbs went off

-         Positive that it was a “discussion” and not a “training”

-         Was authentic way for them to see what they’ve been missing- they really wanted input on what they’re working on

-         Lots of info sharing both ways-youth & adults

-         Brought obstacles to the surface such as time of day, location, etc for meetings

-         YVL subcommittee noted the lack of racial diversity in the TF

-         Some TF members were very long-winded in their questions and comments

YVL Subcommittee feedback on the follow-up discussion at SC:

-         seems like SC members were scared- lots of energy at first but then got apprehensive when start to put it into practice

-         is a need to bring the youth up to speed, develop more information targeted towards youth.

-         Each subcommittee needs to draw up plan of how want to involve youth, what are some of the things that they want youth input on.

-         Approval of idea of multiple entry points such as youth on subcommittees AND targeted forums

-         Needs to be a minimum of 2 youth/ subcommittee and 4 youth/Task Force

-         Need a follow up letter to each of the subcommittees to see if they have emailed their members about nominating/ supporting a youth member

-         We can keep a running list of possible youth to add to subcommittees if chairs are having trouble finding them through the “nomination” method proposed in the SC meeting

3. Discussion of Website

- Must have a young person help with the design

- Needs to have a lot of color

- Tamara’s addition to the blurb looked good.

4. Youth Voice and Leadership goals and next steps

Some goals for the next two years are:

-         to help define what is citizenship education

-         poll young people on what they do- take surveys on as a project:

o       Use MYAN network to begin this

what is citizenship education?

∙ serve as a path for others to come to us and ask us to do a survey for them

∙ ask subcommittee chairs what is one question for the survey

∙ do a weekly survey- perhaps online

∙ think about what info would help the goals of the subcommittee

-         look at the Learning Results- young people know they affect them but know nothing about them

-         think about school culture and mission statements

-         keep a pulse on what’s going on

Next Steps:

Collect photos that could be used in the website

All

Write a letter to all the subcommittee chairs asking where they are at in recruiting youth members

Kerry

Send the group the Raise Your Voice definition of civic engagement

Tamara

Think of one person that would be willing to sit on the task force/a subcommittee
