·        The Youth Voice and Leadership subcommittee has drawn a recipient for the youth essay; $100 will be awarded to a female student at Sanford High School

·        The Youth Voice and Leadership subcommittee worked with the Secretary of State’s office to update the brochure for the 17-yr old voting campaign

·        The “Educating for Democracy” conference on June 1st has a full participant list and finalized agenda

·        Pam reported a successful outcome from the May 11-12 forum, “Teaching Discussion Skills Through Controversial Constitutional Issues;” 18 educators attended and were very interested continuing conversations on the topic and in similar forums

·       On June 19th at the Maple Hill Farm in Hallowell Fran and Jim will hold a meeting with the Superintendents of 8-10 school districts.

2. Transitions (DOE Leadership)

·        Kathy is working with Sandra Moreau in order to arrange a meeting with the Commissioner of Education

·       The Steering Committee discussed two vehicles for continuing DOE’s involvement and leadership: (1) via a team of existing Department staff; (2) by creating a Distinguished Educator position focused on civic learning and engagement.  Both are desirable.

3. Budget Allocations

LYAC Forums

·        LD 2114 stipulates that the DOE will cover the costs of two of the six LYAC public forums; DOE is not required to transfer $30,000 to LYAC

·        The forms must be held between July 1, 2006 and November 30, 2006 AND must take place in high schools north and south of Augusta

·        The Steering Committee will offer suggestions on how to select the school location

Youth Summit

·        Maine Youth Action Network (MYAN) will be hosting their conference on November 30th and December 1st at the Sheraton in South Portland

·        Kerry has begun initial conversations with MYAN; they are open to possible collaborations with the Task Force and will stay in touch

ASCD Conference
