Major Points of Discussion:

1. CMS & General Updates

·        Deborah Both, Deputy Director of the Campaign will be visiting Maine this summer and plans to attend the June 1 conference at Bates College.

·        David Skaggs, Executive Director of the Campaign, has announced his resignation as director of the Campaign.

·        All CMS grantee states are convening in Washington D.C. June 5th-6th.

·        April 17, 2006 is the kickoff for the CMS National Advisory Council

·       Patrick sent a memo to Susan Gendron and Valerie Seaberg suggesting the Distinguished Educator position be used to sustain the work and the recommendations of the Task Force; a “Distinguished Educator for Civic Learning and Engagement” to work within DOE and to coordinate related work across other departments.

2. Review of Budget Allocation of $30,000.

Currently, the original $30,000 that DOE was to transfer to The Legislative Council is encumbered and a letter of non-transfer to the legislature awaits review on Senator Libby Mitchell’s desk.  See LD 2114 for an update on our budget status: http://janus.state.me.us/legis/LawMakerWeb/search.asp.

3. Youth Summit Plans

The Steering Committee reviewed a proposal for a Youth Summit. Plans remain on hold due to the following:

·        Uncertainty of timing (and amount) in delivery of final grant dollars

·        Non-consensus among Steering Committee for Youth Summit mission, outcome, and timing

Possibilities and collaborative options continue to be explored.
