The Path to Maine Lawmaking - Maine Department of the Secretary of State

The Road to Maine Laws

Image of Ernie

"Traveling the path of Maine lawmaking is not as difficult or confusing as you might think. To help you, Representative Smith and I are here to lead you on a trip to show you how a bill becomes a law".

So, imagine taking a road trip as if the car were a document making its way through Maine 's legislative process. You will notice that a lot can happen to a bill along the way it must go to a legislative committee for a public hearing, handle amendments, and face votes in the Maine House of Representatives and the State Senate. If all goes well, the bill will reach its destination on the desk of the Governor to be signed into law.

As you view the cartoon, you could use these questions to think or talk about lawmaking in Maine.

Let's get started!
