Secretary of State Dan A. Gwadosky has organized an event at the Maine Mall on Friday, December 7, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
Invited to attend and share their thoughts are several Maine Pearl Harbor survivors, including John Winkin of Bangor, Louis Mathieson of Owls Head, and Bertrum Davis of Cumberland Center. Also expected to be in attendance are Robert Sessions of Norway, who is a World War II Veteran and whose brother was a Pearl Harbor survivor and Gary Laweryson, of Waldoboro, Chair of the Maine Veterans Coordinating Committee.
The morning's program will also include a special video that has combined President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's December 8, 1941 speech to Congress with visual images from the December 7, 1941 attacks on Pearl Harbor. The video was developed with the assistance of the Maine State Library. The 7-minute video will be replayed throughout the day.
Also in attendance will be members of the Inspector Instructor Staff of Alpha Company, First Battalion, 25th Marines and members of VFW Post 832 of South Portland.
"Given our recent involvement in a number of veteran projects, we felt it important and appropriate to commemorate this critical date in our history," stated Secretary Gwadosky. "It is a date that had an important impact on our country and on the many men and women of Maine who served in the armed serves during that period."
