Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap announces rollout of new online
trailer registration renewal service

Hundreds of thousands of trailer registrations eligible for renewal using new system

Augusta, ME - Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap is pleased to announce an addition to Maine’s award-winning suite of online BMV services: Statewide trailer registration renewal. Starting today, all non-excise-taxable trailers that are registered in Maine can be renewed online with a credit card at www.maine.gov/online/trailerrenewal/.

The trailer renewal service is an enhancement to the already popular Rapid Renewal vehicle registration renewal service, which handled over 62,500 online renewals in 2006. Maine residents and seasonal visitors now can renew any Maine registered non-excise-taxable trailers, including utility, snowmobile, ATV and box trailers, from the comfort of their home or office. This service arrives just in time for the spring peak in trailer registration renewals. Even those who miss their expiration deadline can use this service, since it allows online renewal of expired registrations.

There are more than 200,000 non-excise-taxable trailers registered in the state of Maine. This service will not only provide convenience to citizens who have trailers but will also decrease lines at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch offices. Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap commented, “The BMV is always looking to ease the registration process for the public, and putting our business online is one of the best ways we’ve found to achieve this.”

Trailer registrations due to expire within 60 days may be renewed online, as well as expired trailer registrations. Trailer registrations can be renewed online for a one-year or two-year period. Users will identify the trailer they wish to re-register by providing the control number, registration or plate number, and registrant’s name. Users will also have the option to renew one or multiple trailers in the same transaction. At the end of the transaction, users will be able to print out a confirmation page that will act as a temporary registration until the new tags are received in the mail.

This service is the latest in a suite of online services offered by the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles, including driver’s license and ID card renewals, vanity license plates, and vehicle registration renewals. Maine’s online BMV services were awarded a national Digital Government Achievement Award in 2006 by the Center for Digital Government.
