Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap Announces Expansion of Rapid Renewal Service
taxis and other “for-hire” vehicles can now be re-registered on line
Augusta — Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap announced today that for-hire vehicle registrations, including taxis, limousines, buses, and rental passenger cars now may be renewed through Rapid Renewal www.informe.org/bmv/rapid-renewal/, the State’s online motor vehicle and trailer registration renewal process.
Previously, these types of vehicles had to be renewed at BMV branch offices after paying excise tax at their municipal office. Now users will no longer need to travel to two separate offices to complete their registrations. They will have the ability to register their “for hire” vehicle from the comfort of their home or office 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week.
“There are approximately 4,800 taxis and limousines and 1,300 buses registered in Maine, as well as several thousand rental passenger cars. Most of these vehicles are based in municipalities which participate in Rapid Renewal,” Dunlap noted. “The availability of this service should be a big time savings for these Maine business people.”
“Adding taxis, limousines, and other hire vehicles to a growing list of Rapid Renewal services has been a BMV goal for a while,” noted Dunlap. “The project received a push when Senator Phil Bartlett contacted the Bureau of Motor Vehicles on behalf of a constituent concerned about having to visit both his town office and BMV branch in order to renew his limousines.”
To use Rapid Renewal, the registrant must have access to a computer connected to the internet, as well as a copy of their expiring registration, a form of payment and be a resident of one of the 114 participating municipalities. In addition, hire vehicles must maintain continuous proof of commercial insurance with the BMV in order to use Rapid Renewal.
