Secretary Dunlap Applauds Joint Standing Committee's Support of State Archivist Nominee

Senate Confirmation is final step in appointment of David Cheever to head State Archives

Augusta - The Joint Standing Committee on State and Local Government voted in favor of Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap’s nomination of David R. Cheever to the position of State Archivist today. Secretary Dunlap was quick to express his satisfaction with the Committee’s work. “I thank the members of this Committee for their vigorous participation in the review process relating to my selection for this important post. I am convinced Mr. Cheever will prove to be exactly what the Archives need - a focused, energetic leader, with broad experience and a strong vision for the future of this most important of State resources.”  Dunlap continued, “As this hearing began, I fully expected the Committee to make the right decision based solely on the merits of my nominee, and that is precisely what the Committee has done.”

Numerous supporters offered strong testimony detailing their approval of Cheever’s nomination during the confirmation hearing, which concluded this morning after being carried over from Tuesday. “It’s very gratifying to be approved by the Committee in this process,” said Cheever. “To see the community leaders from around the State who agreed with Secretary Dunlap’s selection of me, and to know I have received the backing of not just the Secretary of State, but also a majority of the Joint Standing Committee on State and Local Government, is especially energizing. I look forward to the Senate confirmation process and to serving the State of Maine in this new role.”

Cheever, an Augusta resident who currently serves as the Executive Director of the Maine Cultural Affairs Council, was recommended for confirmation by the Committee by an 8 to 5 vote. His nomination will now go before the full Senate for final confirmation.
