Grants Awarded to Preserve Significant Historical Collections
Throughout Maine

Applications for Next Round of Grants Due June 1st

AUGUSTA , MAINE – Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, Maine State Archivist Jim Henderson and Maine State Museum Director Joseph Phillips announced on Thursday that facilities throughout Maine will benefit from grants awarded in March to preserve significant historical collections.

Grants have been awarded to libraries, museums, historical societies and other facilities in 18 communities through a joint project of the Maine State Archives and the Maine State Museum. This project offers one application to access funds from five different state and federal sources including the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and Maine’s New Century Community Program.

The primary purpose of this project is to preserve Maine’s significant historical collections--records, archives, artifacts, museum objects--and to make them available to the public. Funds are focused on Museum Facilities, Archives Facilities, Museum Collections, and Archives Collections, and support two types of preservation efforts. The first is designed to indirectly protect all collections at a particular location by improving the facility containing them. The second is intended to directly support the preservation of, and access to, specific historical records collections within a facility.

	Bowdoin College Vital Records Microfilming Project	Prepare preservation microfilm copies of the earliest Board of Trustees/Board of Overseers Minutes (1794-1906) and Faculty Minutes (1805-1907), all bound volumes of formal manuscript minutes recording the establishment and early administration of Bowdoin College; and of manuscript student class ranking/grade sheets.

	Bowdoinham Town Hall Historical Records Archival Consultant	To hire a consultant to asses our collection, tour the facility and write up an assessment and recommend a preservation plan for our documents and suggest any changes or upgrades to our facility.
