Public servants give big to help others

Maine State Employees Combined Charitable Appeal exceeds lofty goal

The 27th Maine State Employees Combined Charitable Appeal (MSECCA) collected an impressive $452,520- funds which are already helping more than 500 non-profit charitable organizations. Donors from all branches of state government gave generously - on average, over 200 dollars is being given by each employee who took part in the appeal. That’s a substantial increase in individual giving over just the last 4 years, according to Secretary of State Matt Dunlap, the 2006 MSECCA Chairperson.

“This effort marks the commitment of Maine state employees to the entire community that is our state,” said Dunlap. “They are not only dedicated public servants, they are also friends, neighbors, and family, and the success of this campaign shows how deeply they care. I have had the unique opportunity to work with many new friends on this campaign, and I am deeply indebted to Governor Baldacci for asking me to lead this effort. I congratulate all of them on their success.”

“I’m proud of the dedication our state’s workers demonstrate everyday on the job and their generosity. Through their gifts, the combined charitable appeal remains a wonderful success story,” said Governor Baldacci. “I’d also like to thank Secretary of State Dunlap for his commitment to this program, and his efforts on behalf of Maine and the hundreds of nonprofit agencies that put these resources to work.”

Donors were able to designate who benefits from their contribution thanks to a comprehensive donor’s guide - a publication that details the missions of hundreds of charitable organizations. This allows donors to target their contributions to specific causes. Local, state, national, and international organizations have all benefited from the generosity of Maine’s state employees. For the first time ever, employees were able to make contributions on line.

Since the campaign began in 1979, nearly $5 million has been raised for charitable giving. More information about MSECCA can be found at the website
