Statement from Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap
Today’s signing of Tina’s Law sends a message to all drivers that Maine takes operating after suspension and the repeated violation of other motor vehicle laws very seriously. As a result of today’s action, the penalties for serious violations will be much stronger and will serve as a more forceful deterrent.
Having chaired the problem driver working group created last summer by Governor Baldacci, and having attended today’s bill signing, I’m hopeful that our roads and highways will be safer as a result of Tina’s Law. By working for passage of this legislation, Tina Turcotte’s friends and relatives have ensured that her legacy will include meaningful reforms to safeguard Maine drivers and their families.
In addition to the Governor and the sponsors of Tina’s Law—Senator Bill Diamond and Representative Darlene Curley—thanks and recognition are in order for Colonel Craig Poulin of the Maine State Police and Transportation Commissioner David Cole for their service on last summer’s problem driver working group, and for their overall efforts to address the problem of drivers operating after suspension and other serious motor vehicle law violations.
