Statement of Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap
Georgia-Pacific's Old Town Mill

Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap spoke today of G-P's announcement of the closing of Old Town Mill, and pledged to do whatever he could to support his neighbors in Old Town.

“I have lived in the Old Town-Orono area for nearly 25 years,” said Dunlap. “My family and I have made our home there because it is a strong, resilient community with much to offer.  This is obviously a terrible setback for all of us, but as we have before, we will pull together and persevere.   Old Town is still, and will continue to be, a place where skilled workers can proudly support their families.  I am committed to helping however I can.”

“Apparently, there are still challenges to be overcome,” said Dunlap. “But if we can't overcome them, it's because those problems are insurmountable.  I have the fullest confidence that we will find long term success in Old Town .”

Dunlap served four terms in the Maine House of Representatives prior to his service as Secretary of State, representing the former 121 st House District from 1996 to 2004.  It was in his last term that G-P first announced its intention to close the mill, but decisive action by Governor Baldacci and the Legislature forestalled that closure.
