Statement of Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap
Regarding the ruling of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court
In the matter of Arsenault vs. Secretary of State

“I would like to thank the Justices of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court for their thoughtful consideration of this case.  Because the law was silent on whether a political party's “replacement” candidate must be an enrolled member of that party, Mr. Arsenault brought forward a legitimate question to the Court, and this ruling will be very helpful in guiding future election decisions.

The court, in making an impartial ruling, has once again sent a clear signal to the public that it serves as a fountainhead of relief to those wishing redress of grievances.  I appreciate Mr. Arsenault's efforts to bring about clarification of the law, and I'm pleased to comply with the Court's ruling.

As always, the Secretary of State's office makes every attempt to fairly interpret the law, and we receive wonderful guidance from the Legislature, our elections experts and from the Office of the Attorney General.  Our work is made better by judicial review, and it will help to ensure a successful election in November.”
