State Provides Grants to Save Historic Documents and Photos

The Maine State Archives has provided thirty-five grants to community organizations for the preservation of and improved access to historic documents and photos, Secretary of State Dan A. Gwadosky announced today. The New Century Community Program, which is funded by the Maine Legislature, and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, enabled the Maine State Archives to award funds for these projects.

The grant requests ranged from preserving the Lincoln family papers in Washington County's Dennys River Historical Society to the cataloging and preservation of photographs and oral history tapes held by the Portland-based Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. A major component of the program is to provide training and technical assistance to help community organizations assess their needs and better protect their historical material.

This material has become a significant resource for seasonal visitors and researchers, as well as the local communities and schools. "Cultural tourism has become an important component of the hospitality industry," Secretary Gwadosky noted. "We must provide quality service in the form of easily accessible, well preserved material to encourage use, ensure an improved understanding of Maine's heritage, and to protect our basic documents."

A list of the 35 most recent grant recipients is attached and represents awards totaling $30,000. An additional $ 23,000 in grants will be distributed in March. The next deadline for grant applications is June 1, 2002. Anyone seeking an application may contact Janet Roberts at 287-5791 or Anne Ball at 287-7591. Applications are also available over the Internet at: www.state.me.us/sos/arc/mhrab/grant.htm.

The State Archives is a Bureau within the Department of the Secretary of State.
