Changing an Address on Driver's Licenses and Vehicle Registrations
Now Easier with New Online Process

Ever had to change your address on your driver's license and not know how?

A new online service makes it easier to change your address on your driver's license and vehicle registration. No longer is it necessary to mail in a change of address or visit the motor vehicle branch office to update your records. A simple step by step process is completed online and the new information is automatically transmitted to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).

"For some people incorrect address information can result in unpleasant and unexpected consequences when the BMV cannot notify them of important changes in their driving status," stated Secretary of State Dan A. Gwadosky.

"This service is a timesaver for Maine citizens. Now it is even easier for people to comply with the existing legal requirement to notify the Bureau of Motor Vehicles with any change of address within 10 days," Secretary Gwadosky continued. "While this is a simple legal requirement, many people fail to comply because they feel it is too difficult to contact the BMV or visit a branch office. A testament to the need for this type of service is the fact that in the first few weeks that this service was available over 700 people have updated their addresses online."

This new service is available under the "How Do I?" section of the State of Maine's web site or on the Secretary of State's web site at

This online service cannot be used to update a name change. Anyone wanting to change their name on a driver's license or registration must visit a branch office.

Maine law requires that the Bureau of Motor Vehicles be notified within 10 days if a person's address or name changes as it appears on a driver's license or registration.
