CONCISE SUMMARY: The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is beginning its biennial schedule of public hearings to consider changes for the 1997-1999 ice fishing and the 1998 and 1999 open water fishing regulations needed to provide for the effective conservation of Maine's inland fisheries, and enhance fishing opportunities throughout the State. CHAPTER NUMBER AND TITLE: Chapter 131 - Learning Results
ADOPTED RULE NUMBER: 97-260
CONCISE SUMMARY: The rule consists of standards for student learning in Maine public schools, grades kindergarten to 12. The standards are outlined in eight academic areas: English language arts, foreign languages (modem and classical languages), social studies, visual and performing arts, science and technology, health and physical education, mathematics, and career preparation. The purpose of the rule is to define what all public school students should know and be able to do in each of the eight content areas. According to statute, public schools will be required to fully implement the rule by the 2002-2003 school year. Implementation will require that public schools help students achieve the standards in each area, which will in turn require that schools align their curriculum and resources with the standards.

CHAPTER NUMBER AND TITLE: Chapter 250 - Rules Relating to Smoking in the Workplace
ADOPTED RULE NUMBER: 97-261
CONCISE SUMMARY: The Workplace Smoking Act Rules were enacted in 1989. The proposed revisions to these rules take into account scientific information which is new since 1989. These rules revisions make the existing rules more clear about what is or is not an acceptable location for an indoor designated smoking area. The ventilation requirements and guidelines for an indoor designated smoking area are included.
