Central Voter Registration

The State of Maine is currently implementing a Central Voter Registration System (CVR) to improve the accuracy and integrity of our voter lists, and to enhance services to voters. In addition, the CVR will provide new efficiencies for election administrators and meet the requirements of the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA). Section 303 of HAVA specifically requires each state to “implement, in a uniform and nondiscriminatory manner, a single, uniform, official, centralized, interactive computerized statewide voter registration list defined, maintained, and administered at the State level that contains the name and registration information of every legally registered voter in the State and assigns a unique identifier to each legally registered voter in the State…”

Historically, voter registration information in Maine has been maintained at the municipal level in more than 500 cities and towns throughout the State. The State is working together with municipal clerks and registrars, and technology specialists to meet the requirements of HAVA, Maine election law and the needs of State and local election officials, to provide an accurate, secure and reliable CVR for Maine citizens.
