Canceling or Reactivating a Registration

How to Cancel a Current Registration:

  1. Print a copy of the Cancellation Form and complete the Registration Data portion of the form. Be sure to have all parties listed on the registration sign in this area.
    • If there are exceptional circumstances where you cannot obtain all signatures, please call 624-9000, ext 52149 for guidance.
  2. Have the Cancellation Form notarized. This can be done at any notary public location or a Motor Vehicle branch office.
  3. Present the form at a branch office or mail it to BMV’s main office. If available, please turn the plates and registration certificate in with the form.
  4. The branch manager or main office staff will sign the form and provide/mail a copy to you to use as proof you have cancelled the registration.
    o If you mailed the form to us, please be sure to include a current mailing address.

NOTE: Once the Bureau cancels a registration, the excise tax and registration fees are “non-transferable” unless reactivated.

How to Activate a Cancelled Registration:

  1. Print a copy of the Activation Form and complete the Registration Data portion of the form. Be sure to have all parties listed on the registration sign in this area.
    • If there are exceptional circumstances where you cannot obtain all signatures, please call 624-9000, ext 52149 for guidance.
  2. Have the Activation Form notarized. This can be done at any notary public location or a Motor Vehicle branch office.
  3. Present the form at a branch office or mail it to BMV’s main office.
    • The branch manager or main office staff will sign the form and provide/mail a copy to you to use as proof you have activated the registration. If you mailed the form to us, please be sure to include a current mailing address.
    • If you have not exceeded the registration period and did not surrender your plates and registration, you will be cleared to use the registration.
    • If you did surrender your plates and registration, you will be provided with a corrected registration and replacement plates.
