How To Obtain a Maine Instruction Permit

You must be at least 15 years of age and have successfully completed an approved driver education course, complete a written knowledge examination and a vision screening

This permit allows the individual to operate a vehicle when accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 20 years of age and has held a valid license for two consecutive years. The permit is generally valid for 18 months. 

In most cases the driver education provider will have the forms processed for you through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and you will receive your permit in the mail. If you are responsible for completing your paperwork, please mail the following items to the address listed below. 

Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Driver License Services Division, Examination Section, 29 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0029

1.  The completed application (.pdf) or application (.xls) (MVE-64)   
2.  The driver education completion certificate 
3.  Your birth certificate.  It must be an original or a photocopy with an embossed 
     seal or stamp of issuing agency.  Notarized copies are not acceptable.  This 
     document will be returned to you.
 4. $10.00 check or money order, payable to the Secretary of State.

For those 18 and over driver education is not required.  The written exam and vision screening are offered on a scheduled basis. Two forms of identification are required.  Birth certificates are required of applicants up to and including age
22.  It must be an original or a photocopy with an embossed seal or stamp of issuing agency.   Notarized copies are not acceptable.  This document will be returned to you.
