Obtaining a Duplicate Drivers License/Identification Card in Maine

Important Note: Anyone seeking to acquire a duplicate Maine driver license or duplicate Maine non-driver identification card, or seeking to renew an existing license or ID card, will need to provide documentary evidence of Maine residency.

If you lose your original Maine drivers license or identification card and it was a photo license or identification card you must visit a motor vehicle branch office or a mobile unit location to have an image retaken.

There is a $5.00 fee for a duplicate license/identification card and you will be asked to complete a form stating that the license/identification card is not in your possession.

Please bring with you two of the following documents for identification. One of these items must indicate your date of birth and the other must bear your written signature.

Examples of documents for identification

Driver's License

Driver's Permit

Social Security Card

Birth Certificate

Passport

Citizenship Papers

Military ID Card

Baptismal Records

Certificate of Marriage

Adoption Papers

Unemployment Card

Concealed Weapons Permit

Court Order

School Records/Transcripts (certified)

Divorce Papers

Military Dependent ID Card

If your original license/identification card was issued with a digital image, you do not need to visit a motor vehicle office to process the request for duplicate. You may process at a branch office or you could choose the option of replacing the credential on-line through the convenience of our on-line renewal/replacement service or through the mail.

The on-line service is available to any Maine licensed driver with an active digital license, digital motorcycle license or digital motor driven cycle restricted license and any holder of a digital Maine ID card. This service is not available for commercial driver license holders. You will need your social security number, a valid credit card (Visa or Mastercard) and a printer.

If you use the mail process you must provide a written request which should include your name, date of birth and current address as well as a brief statement certifying the original license/identification card is not in your possession and what happened to your original. The digital image and signature on file will be verified and the duplicate license/identification card processed and mailed to you. You will need to submit along with the written request a $5.00 fee.

It is not necessary, but if you choose to obtain the duplicate license/identification card paperwork prior to going to a branch office or mobile unit, you may make the same written request as instructed above and the paperwork will be mailed to you. This process would also apply if you are out of state or out of the country and need to obtain a duplicate.

Any written requests should be mailed to:
