Newspapers by Location and Title
This document, newstitl.doc, and its companion, newsppr.doc, are available for downloading at ftp://ftp.state.me.us/pub/archives/newstitl.doc and ftp://ftp.state.me.us/pub/archives/newsppr.doc respectively.
In this document, brackets, e.g., [Kennebunk, Me.], indicate that the publication location does not appear in the masthead, but is assumed from other information. Location information without brackets indicates the place of publication noted in the masthead.
__________________________________________The companion document newsppr.doc contains detailed information regarding what portions of a newspaper are in a particular repository. Here is a brief guide:
Sample entry:
<1833:1:2/3, 1:8-2:25,27, 3:1> <1834:1:2,6,27, 2:10, 3:1><1838:3:1/2,5,7/10,14/15>
- The four-digit number is the year of publication
- <>surrounds a particular year or an uninterrupted span of several years
- a single or double digit before a ":" refers to the month of publication
- a single or double digit after a ":" refers to the day of the month
- a "-" separates one month from another
- a "/" indicates a range of dates within a month
- a "," indicates a break in consecutive dates
Thus, 1833:1:2/3 indicates the January 2-3, 1833 copies;
1:8-2:25,27, 3:1 indicates a range of copies from January 8th through February 25th, plus February 27th, and March 1st.
