Food for thought . . .

The Adjutant General created this table for Androscoggin and the other counties of Maine by using the 1960 U.S. Census. (You can find out more about censuses in this Turner web page.) Men between the ages of 18 and 45 were liable for military service. Those under 21 years of age had to have permission of a parent or guardian. Of course, some people at both ends of the age spectrum lied about their age, especially during the early years of the War, when the idea of being a soldier seemed like it would be fun and a great adventure.
