Where is the Maine State Archives and what are the hours? Are school groups permitted
to visit the Archives? How can I make arrangements for a small group of my students to visit the Archives? |
The Maine State Archives is located in the Cultural Building in the State House complex, just south of the State House in Augusta. The public Research Room where people can view records and conduct research is open weekdays from 8: 00 AM to 4:00 PM. Remember, you can visit us anytime on-line at http://www.maine.gov/sos/arc/ , where you can find comprehensive descriptions of some of our most important holdings. Due to space and staff limitations and security requirements, we are unable to accommodate large school groups. Teachers may, however, arrange to bring not more than 6 to 10 students to the Research Room by prior arrangement with us. Simultaneous arrangements may be made with the Maine State Library which shares the opposite wing of our facility. A full class may be divided, with some students working in the Library while others are working in the Archives. It's generally best to make arrangements with us to bring your students to the Archives by 9 in the morning at the latest, before other researchers arrive to claim staff attention, computers and microfilm equipment. We will make every attempt to have materials your students will need available upon your arrival - and of course, the better prepared your students are beforehand, the more productive their time here will be. We do permit youngsters under the age of 16 to have individual access to our records if they are accompanied by an adult. You can call
us at (207) 287 - 5795, or write us at 84 State House Station, Augusta
ME 04333. You can also e-mail the staff members who researched and selected
the materials for this project on the town of Turner if you have questions,
comments, or would like to know more about local history resources in
the Maine State Archives. Contact sylvia.sherman@ state.me.us
