Maine New Century Community Program Collections Facilities Grants are now available.
This program has two deadlines a year. The next deadline is December 1, 2009. Applications should be for projects that will be completed between March 1, 2010 and March 1, 2011. The second deadline will be May 1, 2010. Applications should be for projects that will be completed between August 1, 2010 and August 1, 2011.
The Maine New Century Community Program Collections Facilities Grant Program is designed to help preserve Maine facilities housing historically, scientifically or artistically significant collections. Examples of eligible projects include physical repair and preservation, purcahse of shelving, boxes or other storage, improved access projects, engaging a consultant to assess the facility and develop a preservation plan recommendation. (Please note: The Maine Historic Preservation Commission offers grants to help preserve Maine facilities that are historic but do not necessarily house collections.)

The Historical Records Collections Grant Program is a federally funded program that helps preserve Maine's significant historical records, documents, archival and printed materials and make them available to the public. If your organization is responsible for records important to understanding the history of Maine, look into this program. The Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS) in Washington, D.C. has a range of federally funded grant programs available. to review a list of available programs, visit their website. IMLS grants include the Conservation Assessment Program, the Museum Assessment Program, Museums for America and many others.
The History Channel's grant program, "Save Our History Awards," offers grant money to historical societies and schools that "inspire, motivate, and educate local communities on the importance of preserving the past." The amount of the awards range from $1000 to $10,000. Guidelines for the 2008 program are available on the website www.saveourhistory.com
