Poor Tom never amounted to much after his truly distinguished record in the war. The baby of the family, he seems to have been something of a free spirit, lacking the stern sense of responsibility that characterized his brothers. He drifted from one job to another, often neglecting his wife in his restlessness; and probably suffered from alcoholism as well as other health problems.
