State Guards

By General Order #9, dated July 1, 1863, the Commander in Chief of the State called upon her citizens to help State authorities to defend the coast line against marauding rebels. The Ordnance Department at Washington, D.C. was also responding to this call by supplying cannon, ammunition and arms to forts along the Maine coast. Forts mainly supplied were in Kittery, Portland, Eastport and forts in the Penobscot and Kennebec Rivers.

These records are petitions to the Governor and Executive Council, enlistment rolls, descriptive rolls, muster and payrolls. On the descriptive rolls one can sometimes find the town, county and place of birth of an enrollee.
