Adj. Gen.
State of Maine
Augusta,:
Dear Sir,
In compliance with your suggestion relative to the
contemplated pilgrimage to Gettysburg of all veterans
who participated in that famous battle 50 years ago - I
have the honor to state that I have resided in Maine for
the past 35 years: that I am a native of the State of
Virginia; that I enlisted in the Confederate Army early in
1861, serving under Genl. Fitzhugh Lee, as a member of
the 1st Regiment of Virginia Cavalry. That I participated
in the invasion of Pennsylvania during the campaign of
1863. - taking part, with my commmand, in the great battle
of July 1st. - 3d. That I was engaged with the Union Cavalry
on the afternoon of the 3d day of the encounter following
Pickett's charge, when I was shot - my horse being killed at
the same time. Am I eligible to be classed as one of the
veterans to revisit that historic field at the expense of the
State?
Very Respectfully,
Chas. E. Williams
