* The 16th did not actually participate in the battles at South Mountain and Antietam, but they were ordered to march there, and did arrive at South Mountain just after the fighting stopped. They were present, but held in reserve during the subsequent battle at Atnietam. Their regimental histories and memoirs always indicate that they considered themselves as having been part of this campaign; and we did not feel that we should eliminate them because they were slow getting up to South Mountain or because General McClellan held them in reserve at Antietam.
