
Our Adjutant General's records contain a large amount of material, photographs and correspondence, about Maine's experience during the Civil War.
The 16th Maine Infantry was mustered into sevice August 14, 1862. This photograph was taken at the Maine State House in June of 1865 when they were being mustered out after three years. The regiment was involved in many of the hardest fought battles including those at Gettysburg, Wilderness and Spottsylvania.
