Accessible Transportation

The following represents information about recreational opportunities available to people with disabilities in Maine. The level of access and/or compliance with regulatory mandates for public accommodations has not been verified; the information has been provided by the listed organization. Calling ahead for specific accessibility information is highly recommended.

Maine State Ferry Service
P.O. Box 645, 517A Main Street, Rockland. (207) 596-2202.
The Maine Department of Transportation operates ferry service out of Rockland, Lincolnville, and Bass Harbor to the islands of Vinalhaven, North Haven, Matinicus Island, Isleboro, Swans Island and Frenchboro. Most terminals and landings have been upgraded to incorporate accessible features such as HC parking at facilities, wheelchair seating and other improvements to vessels, and accessible written information on schedules for special accommodations.

Casco Bay Ferry Service, Casco Bay Lines
Commercial & Franklin Streets, Portland. (207) 774-7871.
Daily service from Portland to the Casco Bay Islands. The main terminal in Portland meets or exceeds current access design standards. Vessels have incorporated accessible seating and restrooms. Recent modifications to landings at the outlying islands have resulted in modestly successful accommodations limited only by severe tides. Tides result in ramp slopes that are in compliance about 60% of the time. Due to steep topographic conditions at most of the islands, grade slope immediately upon disembarking from the ferry is often steep enough to require assistance. Visitors with disabilities are advised to take their own vehicles if island assistance is not available from friends or relatives. Call ahead for specific information on conditions at each island landing.
