Veterinarian

Veterinarian means a person who is validly and currently licensed by the board to practice veterinary medicine in this State.

Veterinarian means a person who has received a doctor's degree in veterinary medicine from a school of veterinary medicine.

Veterinary medicine includes veterinary surgery, obstetrics, dentistry and all other branches or specialties of veterinary medicine including all aspects of the "practice of veterinary medicine" under subsection 7.

Veterinarians:

  • The Maine Jurisprudence Examination is a take home examination covering the Maine Veterinary Practice Act, Board of Veterinary Medicine Licensing Rules, and additional Maine Laws and Rules relating to veterinary medicine. Upon receipt of a complete application an examination will be mailed to you.

Temporary Permits — Veterinary Applicants Only

Temporary permits may be issued to veterinary applicants who wish to work under the supervision of a Maine licensed veterinarian until the time of the next examination. In order to obtain a temporary permit, please follow the following procedure:

You may not begin practicing in Maine until you have received your temporary permit.

  1. Applicant must submit an application for the next scheduled examination, including fee and supporting documents. Supporting documents include: (1) Official transcripts and (2) NBE and CCT or NAVLE scores forwarded directly from the Interstate Reporting Service.
  2. Applicant must send a written request for a temporary permit. This request must include the following information:
    • Name and address of employer (must be a Maine licensed veterinarian);
    • Name of applicant's college and date of graduation; and
    • Date on which temporary permit is needed.
  3. Employer must also send a written request, on his/her business stationery. This request must include the following information:
    • Name and address;
    • Date of hire; and
    • Statement that the applicant will be under the supervision of the licensee;
  4. Applicant must also furnish proof of liability insurance to cover the duration of the permit.

Renewal fees and information

  • Annual renewal fee $75.00

  • Renews annually on September 30th
Requirements
  • A late fee of $50.00 is assessed for licenses renewed after the license expiration date.
  • Licenses may be renewed up to 90 days after the date of expiration upon payment of a late fee of $50 in addition to the renewal fee. Any person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after license expiration date is subject to all requirements governing new applicants and is required to reapply with original license application, documentation and fees.
  • Renewal applications are mailed approximately 30 days prior to the license expiration date. It is the licensee's responsibility to keep the Board informed of the current license address and/or to see that the license is renewed absent the renewal application.
  • Continuing Education: 24 hours of board approved continuing education is required with renewal in even numbered year.

    The Department must verify that you have met all the conditions for renewal before your license is renewed. Online submission of your renewal application should not be construed as automatic renewal of your license.
