Podiatrist

"Podiatrist" means an individual currently licensed to practice Podiatric Medicine: The diagnosis and treatment of maladies of the human foot and ankle by medical, surgical or mechanical means. Practice of Podiatric Medicine includes the administration of local anesthesia in conjunction with the practice of Podiatry. The use of general anesthesia is permitted in conjunction with the practice of Podiatry when administered or supervised by a Medical or Osteopathic Physician who assumes responsibility for the administration of that anesthesia to a patient being treated by a Podiatrist.

Requirements

The application, along with all supporting documents and fees, must be submitted to the Board at least 10 days prior to the Board meeting at which you wish to have your application reviewed. Before licensure may be granted, applicants must present themselves for and successfully pass an oral examination at a regular meeting of the Board.

Examination

The Board has adopted the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners' Part III examination as its standard examination for licensure qualification. The examination will be offered in Maine in June and December of each year. The examination fee is $900.

An application for examination shall include:

  • A completed application form;
  • Official transcript of Pre-Podiatric education;
  • Copy of podiatric degree;
  • A completed certificate of podiatric education;
  • Official documentation of passing scores on Parts I and II of the National Boards;
  • Official documentation of passing scores on Part III National Boards Examination;
  • Copy of certificate of Residency;
  • Copy of applicant's CPR certification; and
  • NPDB/HIPDB Self-query report(s).

Endorsement

An application for licensure on the basis of endorsement of scores attained on the examination of the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners shall include:

  • A completed application form;
  • Official transcript of Pre-Podiatric education;
  • Copy of Podiatric degree;
  • A completed certificate of podiatric education;
  • Official documentation of passing scores on Parts I and II of the National Boards;
  • Official documentation of passing scores on Part III National Boards Examination;
  • Copy of certificate of Residency;
  • Copy of applicant's CPR certification;
  • NPDB/HIPDB Self-query report(s); and
  • A verification of licensure form completed by any state board where applicant is presently or was previously licensed.

Renewal fees and information

Fees
  • Renewal fee $450
Requirements
  • A late fee of $50 is assessed for licenses renewed after the June 30 license expiration date.
  • Renewal reminders are mailed approximately 60 days prior to the license expiration date.
  • A late fee of $50 is assessed for licenses renewed 91 days to 2 years after the license expiration date.
  • A person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the license expiration date is subject to all requirements governing new applicants and is required to reapply with an original license application, documentation and fees.
  • Continuing Education: 25 hours of continuing education is due at the time of renewal in the odd-numbered years pursuant to board rules.

    The Department must verify that you have met all the conditions for renewal before your license is renewed. Online submission of your renewal application should not be construed as automatic renewal of your license.
