Frequently Asked Questions - Geologist Certifications

Do I need to pass a test?

Yes. The Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) national examination and a local knowledge exam.

How do I apply to take the exam?

Click HERE to download an application. Submit the application with a $25 application fee.

How do I schedule my exam?

The Board staff will notify you when your application has been approved. You will be instructed to submit your examination fee to the Board at least 45 days prior to the scheduled exam date.

How often is the test given?

Twice a year, in March and September.

How much does the test cost?

Fundamentals of Geology - $200
Practice of Geology - $200
Northern New England Geology - $50

Is my application confidential?

No. With the exception of Social Security Number, all application information is public. Contact information provided to the Board is posted on our website.
